What is the extent of GBA support with the GB Plugin?

Hello,
I recently got my Retrode 2 and now I'm thinking of getting the Gameboy plugin. It will be useful for my old Pokemon saves to be able to back them up before changing the battery.
The question I have is to what extent is this supported for GBA games? Would I be able to dump and then restore the save files for games like Pokemon Emerald or Leafgreen? From what I can see poking around the boards, the answer seems to be "no", but I want to ask to confirm.
If it's not possible to rip or restore saves for GBA games, what are the prospects of this being supported with a firmware update in the future?
Thanks for the help!

It was my understand GBA has no internal definite information on save data.
Emulators support it by reading the entire ROM to guess what save format the game uses.
However, at least one game is known to deliberately throw emulators red herrings as a form of copy-protection.

Retrode can't deal with GBA saves as for now, ene though it does it with GB and GBC saves.

If you wanna back up and restore GBA saves your best bet is to get a DS or DS Lite (the ones with GBA slots), a cheap slot-1 flashcard like the R4 and use the homebrew called "GBA Save Tool" to do the dirty work. Works as a charm.
