Title: Getting the Retrode to read a save from the computer for a Genesis game
Post by: Knight of Time on 21/Jan/2017 05:27:06 PM
Hi guys, I'm new here (though I'm not new to backing up/restoring saves, as I have used some devices similar to the Retrode before).

A few days ago I received a Retrode2 I ordered, and I was wondering, how well does it work when it comes to putting a save off the computer onto a Sega Genesis game?  The only game I have for the system that has a save feature is Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (I also have Sonic & Knuckles, but I've been having a little bit of trouble getting the Retrode2 to recognize the two games when they're locked on together as Sonic 3 & Knuckles).

Anyway, thanks in advance.  Hopefully someday, the Retrode2 will become easier to use.

The Retrode is easy to use. It's the games that cause trouble. ;)

Saves: The issues with the Mega Drive/Genesis saves have been discussed recently, and I have just uploaded my second attempt to resolve them: v0.21-beta (http://forum.retrode.org/index.php/topic,337.msg2392.html#msg2392)
Remember to set "[sramReadonly] 0" in RETRODE.CFG if you want to modify the saves on any cartridge.
And you will need to set "[segaSram16bit]" as appropriate for your emulator/the format of the file you are trying to copy.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles: The Retrode firmware includes special code for that game, so it has probably worked once. The save size for it has been wrong, but I've hopefully fixed that in v0.21-beta. I cannot test it though.

Thanks, but for some reason I'm having quite a hard time updating my Retrode2 to have the new firmware (I followed the instructions on retrode.org as best as I could, but Windows keeps telling me I have the latest firmware on it which I know isn't true; if it helps I have Windows 7).  Is there an alternate way to get the update installed successfully, or a program I can go into on the computer that'll help me out?

Thanks again.

The instructions should work. I use Windows 7 too.

You press the buttons to reset it, the device will sound like it went off and then in device manager you will see the device with the numbers indicated in the instructions. Don't unplug it or anything.

At this point you start the software Flip. Follow instructions as they were listed and it should work. :)

Okay, I managed to get the Retrode firmware updated, so thanks for the help guys.

While I was playing Sonic 3, I set my save directory (for SRAM saves) to C:/Emulation, and managed to get a save there with the Retrode, but how can I transfer that save to the Retrode without having it overwritten with a new, blank save?
