Title: Anyone ever used the Retrode on a PHONE?
Post by: Matthias_H on 04/Jan/2012 08:36:42 AM
Hi!

It just came to me that we still don't have any evidence of a Retrode running on the OTG port of a smartphone. Has anyone ever tried that? I think that would be fairly neat.

Cheers,
Matthias

My phone, to my knowledge, doesn't have a USB host controller... unless one can be emulated with software or something (but I doubt that's the case). So I would expect it's impossible for many phones.

EDIT: Ah, I didn't know of USB OTG - I suspect, then, that my phone lacks support for it (HTC Hero).

EDIT2: Oh, quick google gave me the answer that my phone DOES have OTG... now, if only it had a decent enough graphics chipset to run emulators well ;)

Retrode2 on a Galaxy Note

The ROM read, SRAM read/write functionality works fiine.
I've heard USB gamepads aren't supported in the version of Android (2.3.x, Gingerbread) this phone ships with.
I don't have any SFC or Mega Drive controllers handy to test though. (Bluetooth controllers will work of course.)
It reports "mouse connected" so the mouse controller part seems to be recognized.

SNES 9x EX should be free on Android, ( if it's available ) and should support the new iCade mode on the Retrode. That'll get your controllers up and running.

Great! Congratulations, you are the first to prove it actually works. As for the controller part, the latest firmware version has a "Keyboard" mode that should work even under operating systems without native USB game controller support. You will first have to configure the keys, though.
