SMK Cart Bad Checksum

I dusted off my Super Mario Kart cartridge, and plugged it into the retrode. Other carts work, but this one is giving me a bad checksum error, saying that the ROM is bad.

Is this a ROM error, is the save battery dead, or is there some sort of compatibility issue? I checked the list of compatibility list and it seemed to indicate that the cart should work.

Did you just dust the cartridge off, or clean it as recommended?

The dusting off was more figurative. However, you were correct to assume I just picked it up and removed the dust cover (which several of my games have).

After several rounds of the suggested cleaning, which I have now done, I am still getting the same checksum error.
