I'm looking into picking up a Retrode to replace a failed Famiclone system I have. I know that it works out of the box with Wii homebrew SNES emulators but was wondering if anyone has tried using the super game boy with the Retrode and what the results were.

According to the FAQ, it just picks up the SGB ROM, so it'll act in the emulator as if you tried it on a NES without a GB game. If you want to read GB carts, you'll need to build or buy (in the next production run estimated Q2 2012) the Game Boy and Nintendo 64 plug in. This will read N64 and Game Boy games (all flavours).

Applause! Someone just read the FAQ ;-)

Yeah, GB games will only be supported through plug-in.

Out of interest,  do you know if this something which could theoretically be fixed with a retrode firmware update,  or would it require hardware changes or even changes to the emulation software?

I might be wrong, but the way I understand it, the SGB essentially contains a Game Boy, so hardware inside the cart itself does runs the code, and just provides the SNES with video and audio and gets controls. It probably uses direct CPU access in many places (the "extra" contacts on the left and right of the cartridge) so emulators and hardware alike would need extensive modifications - there's just no way to access the GB ROM from outside the cart.

I think byuu wrote some kind of plugin or something for BSNES to try to get Super Game Boy working, but it won't matter if Retrode can't do it's part and detect the Game Boy cartridge. You might be able to use the SNES slot for Super Game Boy and the Genesis slot for the N64/GB adapter to simulate a Super Game Boy. I don't know if it will actually work because I don't have the adapter to try it, but if you have that stuff, you could try it.

The SGB does not pass through the Game Boy ROM, period. Nothing to do on the Retrode's part.

That's why I mentioned the adapter being needed, Matthias. In order for both to be detected, they need to be separated.

I don't have the adapter to test it further than that.
