SNES controller on iPad

Hello, I've seen on the retrode website that you can use the retrode to use snes controllers to play emulators on an ipad. The instructions I saw mentioned the camera connection kit from apple. Does anyone know if this will work using a usb female to female coupler instead of the camera connection kit? I'm using a non-jailbroken iPad air 2 with iOS 9.2.1, using the Provenance emulator and I do have a powered usb hub.
